Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements to join?

Any student of any major at the University of Florida or Santa Fe in good standing can join. Every active member is required to maintain a 2.0 GPA and be enrolled in a band class. This can include Gator Marching Band, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Concert Bands. Santa Fe bands are also included in the enrollment requirement.

What is "the candidate process"?

To gain active membership, prospective members must first go through the candidate process. It is an 8-10 week process (so it lasts throughout most of the semester) that serves as a way for candidate members to test out what it is like to be a full Sister in Tau Beta Sigma.

How can i become a candidate?

To be considered for candidacy, you must meet the requirements of membership as stated in the first question. You must also come to at least two recruitment events at the beginning of the semester.

what is kappa kappa psi?

Kappa Kappa Psi is our brother organization, meaning they also serve the University of Florida bands. We have similar principles and beginnings, but different national leadership and history. Our chapters are run independently of one another, and each chapter has its own distinct traditions. We do often work together and work to achieve similar goals. You can find their website here.

if Tau beta sigma is a sorority, why are there males in it?

At the University of Florida, both Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi are Co-Ed, meaning any gender can join our organizations. All members of Tau Beta Sigma are referred to as "sisters" and all members of Kappa Kappa Psi are referred to as "brothers". Not all chapters at every university follow this guideline, but it is a common practice.

What service projects does Tau Beta sigma do?

Our service projects include chair setups, uniform mending, hosting concert receptions, distributing Gator Band gear, moving equipment, and community outreach. We have day-to-day projects as well as bigger projects that happen once a month. These bigger projects can include cleaning the music building locker room, helping host state FBA music performance assessment, and more!

IS there a monetary requirement?

Yes, there are both national and chapter dues. National dues, which are collected during the fall, are $100. Chapter dues are collected in the spring and can vary depending on chapter needs, but are usually less than $75.
